LEGISLATION & COMPLIANCE

In order to produce timber packaging that can be used for transporting and exporting goods in the UK and around the globe, there are regulations and industry legislation that we must comply with.

Below, you can read more about the regulations R. West & Son comply with and work in accordance to.

ISPM15

ISPM15 (International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures) is an international regulation that was introduced into the timber packaging industry in 2005. Developed by the IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention), the core purpose of this legislation is to regulate the control and spread of forest pests and timber diseases that could negatively affect plant life and ecosystems.

ISPM 15 Certified - R West Packaging Solutions

Timber must be heat treated to 56°c for a minimum of 30 minutes and fumigated using methyl bromide in order to comply with the ISPM15 standard.

These processes must be carried out by companies licensed under the UK Wood Packing Material Marking Programme. Approved companies are issued with a license and re-assessed every six months. In both cases, the timber must be debarked prior to treatment. Products produced by licensed manufacturers are stamped with a the ‘wheat stamp’ mark of compliance to prove they conform to standards.

Many countries now require imported timber to satisfy the ISPM 15 phytosanitary regulations, which are recognised by the World Trade Organization.

The countries that require these measures include:

9

UK

9

EU member states (for non-EU products only)

9

Canada

9

Australia

9

USA

9

China

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

“Finding a local company who could manufacture packing cases to meet the recent ISPM15 timber packaging regulations for our aftersales department was high on our agenda. R. West & Son in Plymouth has successfully provided us with a reliable solution to this problem.”

GRANT HOOPER, HEAD OF MATERIALS & AFTERSALES, PRINCESS YACHTS INTERNATIONAL PLC

“When we made the decision to move our manufacturing facility to China, there were several issues that needed hands-on management. When it came to shipping the machinery and components, the R. West & Son team took full control of the move, from arranging the containers to the packaging and paperwork required to complete the move. This was one less headache to deal with. A good, all-round job and R. West & Son are thoroughly recommended to anyone else needing a similar service.”
