What is CNC Cutting?

CNC cutting is where our traditional timber processes are revolutionised by digital precision! Using ‘computer numerical control‘ cutting machines, we shape and prepare wooden components exactly to size, following detailed designs with a level of accuracy that is difficult to achieve by hand alone. Every cut is guided by digital instructions, which means each piece is consistent, clean, and ready for assembly or finishing.

In our workshop, CNC cutting plays a key role in how we produce wooden packaging (including both wooden crates and packing cases). It allows us to turn raw timber sheets into usable parts for crates, cases, and custom-built packing solutions. From simple straight cuts to more complex profiles and internal cut-outs, the process gives us the flexibility to create almost any wooden component required for a project.

Bespoke CNC Cutting Services

No two packaging projects are the same (we have packaged everything from Jaguar E-Type bonnets to full factories!), which is where CNC cutting really comes into its own. We use it to produce timber parts that are tailored to specific sizes, shapes, and functions, whether that’s side panels for export crates or internal components designed to secure delicate goods in transit.

Because the process is digitally controlled, we can replicate designs to the mm with exact accuracy across as many pieces as needed, making it ideal for both one-off builds and larger production runs. It also allows us to produce detailed shapes and openings that would be far more time-consuming using traditional methods.

We regularly work with customers who need something a bit different or ‘outside the box’. This can include specially shaped panels, precision-cut apertures, or timber parts designed to interlock as part of a larger structure. By working directly from your requirements, we can translate drawings or ideas into practical wooden components that fit the job properly the first time.

End-to-End CNC Cutting Solutions

Our CNC Cutting service is just one part of our larger collection of CNC Processes (Like our CNC Services and CNC Planning) and again part of a wider in-house manufacturing process here in Plymouth. Everything is handled under one roof (at our HQ in 2 Ocean Quay), from the start right through to cutting, assembly, and final checks before dispatch.

This approach means we can keep a close eye on quality at every stage, while also making sure production stays efficient. Once a design is set up in the CNC system, it can be produced consistently, helping reduce delays and keeping projects moving smoothly. Whether it’s a full set of crate panels, repeat components for ongoing packaging needs, or a completely bespoke wooden solution, our workshop is set up to deliver accurate results without unnecessary complication.

Precision CNC Cutting for Your Wooden Projects

Good packaging is all about the tolerances it’s built to. We keep tight tolerances here at R. West and Son, and CNC cutting makes that possible by ensuring each wooden component is cut to the exact dimensions required. This is especially important in export packaging, where everything needs to hold its shape, protect its contents, and withstand handling during transport.

Instead of relying on manual marking and cutting, CNC technology removes guesswork. The result is cleaner edges, consistent sizing, and components that slot together as intended. It also opens the door to more complex designs, including shaped sections and internal features that help improve strength and function.

From protective crates to specialist timber assemblies, CNC cutting gives us the control needed to produce reliable, well-fitting wooden components every time.
